The birth certificate of Helen Gartshore of 1868 recorded her as the illegitimate daughter of James Gartshore and Euphemia Reid MS Simpson, a widow. The certificate was signed by both father and mother.

The 1871 census recorded Ellen Gartshore as the child of John Gartshore and his wife Agnes, probably her grandparents. ^{2 3}
