Mary Hardie was living at Goosepools in Methlick Parish, Aberdeenshire, when the census for Scotland in 1851 was taken. She was, in that census list, the fourth youngest of nine children. Mary was recorded as 7 years old and recorded as born in Methlick, Aberdeenshire.
The 1861 census for Methlick parish recorded "Mary Hardy" living and working as a general servant at Makle Methlick in the household of 86 year old Elspet Cooper.
Mary Duncan, aged 37 years, a widow, was living in 1881 in Aberdour parish Kincardineshire with her three children, Isabella, William and Jane, according to the census of that year. She was a live-in domestic servant ina hotel at No 43 High Street.
