The 1841 census for Methlick in Aberdeenshire recorded John Hardie living with his family at Auchencrieve. He was aged 4 years and had been born in Aberdeenshire.
John Hardie was living at Goosepools in Methlick Parish, Aberdeenshire, when the census for Scotland in 1851 was taken. He was, in that census list, the third eldest of nine children. John was recorded as 10 years old and recorded as born in Methlick, Aberdeenshire. He was, according to the census note, 'at home'.
The 1861 census found John S. Hardie living in the St Andrew registration district of Edinburgh, with his wife and 2 month old, daughter at at 2 Nottingham Terrace in the civil parish of Edinburgh Greenside. He was recorded as 23 years old and had been born in Methlick, Aberdeenshire. He worked as a letter carrier. Note: Ancestry.co.uk census records supply the above registration details. However Scotland's People list the district as Newington and Grange. The registration number is the same 685/02, and the enumerating district is 025.
John Hardie and his family were living at 6 Broughton Place East, Edinburgh St Mary, Midlothian, Scotland in 1871. John was a 'letter carrier': "John Hardie 33 Mary Hardie 29 Jane Ann Hardie 10 John Watson Hardie 4 Wm Sinclair Hardie 2 Susan T Hardie 5 Months"
In the census of 1881 for Edinburgh, John Hardie was recorded as head of quite a large household living at 10 North Clyde Street Lane. It comprised himself and his wife, their seven children, and a boarder who was a veterinary student, John R. Dykes, aged 21 years. John Hardie was 43 years of age and had been born in Methlick parish, Aberdeenshire. He was a letter carrier by occupation.
John was still working as a letter carrier in 1891 when the census of that year was taken. He and his wife, with five of their children, two grandchildren, Matthew Y Hardie and James H. Hardie, and two boarders lived at 19 Montgomery Street, Edinburgh South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
The 1901 census for Edinburgh South Leith civil parish recorded John S. Hardie as a retired Letter Carrier. Born in Methlick, Aberdeenshire, he was now 63 years old. He was the head of a mixed household at 19 Montgomery Street: himself and his wife, some of his children including his married daughter, Jane, her two children and a English borrn boarder, aged 22 years, Albert S. Walker.
John's death certificate of 1916 recorded him as a retired postman married to Mary Watson. His age at death was 77 years.

John Strachan Hardy [sic] was an unmarried man, aged 22 years, who worked as a labourer. His address was noted as Auchincruive in the parish of Methlic.
Mary Watson was 19 years old and from Friockheim in the parish of Kirkden. She was single too.
