  General Notes:

The 1861 census recorded Mary T. Hardie living in the St Andrew registration district of Edinburgh, with her husband and 2 month old, daughter at at 2 Nottingham Terrace in the civil parish of Edinburgh Greenside. She was recorded as 19 years old and had been born in Kirkden, Forfarshire.

In the census of 1881 for Edinburgh Newington, Mary W. Hardie was recorded living at 10 North Clyde Street Lane with her husband and family of seven children, and one boarder. Mary Hardie was 39 years of age and had been born in Friockheim, Forfarshire.

The 1901 census for Edinburgh South Leith civil parish recorded Mary Hardie living with her family of children and grandchildren and one boarder at 19 Montgomery Street. She was now 59 years old and had been born in Friockheim, Forfarshire. Mary had four of her grandchildren living with her, all born in Edinburgh: Matthew Hardie, aged 19 years, a hotel servant ; James Hardie aged 13 years, a scholar; Albert W. Gough Hardie aged 4 years; and Ethel E. Gough Hardie aged 3 months.


Mary married John Strachan HARDY, son of William HARDIE Farmer, and Fiddler and Mary STRACHEN, on 21 July 1860 in Friockheim, Kirkden Parish, Forfarshire, Scotland.1 (John Strachan HARDY was born in 1838 in Methlick parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and died 10 March 1916 at 5.15 am in 19 Montgomery Street, Edinburgh, Scotland 6.). The cause of his death was senile decay.

The marriage took place after banns according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland. The minister, Thomas Wilson, performed the ceremony. The witnesses were John Watson and James Hardie.

John Strachan Hardy [sic] was an unmarried man, aged 22 years, who worked as a labourer. His address was noted as Auchincruive in the parish of Methlic.

Mary Watson was 19 years old and from Friockheim in the parish of Kirkden. She was single too.

The marriage was registered on the 23 July, John Sheriffs being the registrar. 7
