Letters by Charles, Earl of Dalkeith [later 4th Duke of Buccleuch], and William Garthshore, his companion and tutor on a continental tour, to the Duke of Buccleuch
Locations from which the letters are written include St Petersburg (nos.1-4); Warsaw (no.5); and Vienna (no.6). The interest in these letters lies mainly in Garthshore's comments on the course of the Revolutionary wars in Europe, and on adverse weather conditions in Russia, both of which forced him to the modify the originally intended route for the tour. [For brief notes on Garthshore see the Dictionary of National Biography and Roland Thorne (Ed.), The History of Parliament, The Commons, 1790-1820]."
