INNES, Janet 1 2

  • Born: About 1456
  • Marriage (1): SUTHERLAND, William of Quarrelwood, later 4th of Duffus 1
  • Marriage (2): ROSE, Hugh 8th of Kilravock by 1517 1 2

   User ID: W292.

Janet married William SUTHERLAND of Quarrelwood, later 4th of Duffus, son of William SUTHERLAND 'of Berydall' and Unknown.1 (William SUTHERLAND of Quarrelwood, later 4th of Duffus was born about 1454 and died before February 1514 1.)

  Marriage Notes:

"As stated above, it has been assumed that he was the second son of the first Alexander Sutherland of Duffus, and that Christina of Duffus, named above, was his niece. The consistorial sentence of 29 April 1494, already cited, p. 194, supra, distinctly proves that he was the uncle of Christina, and he must therefore have been the second son, not of the first Alexander, but of William, his eldest son, and at least a younger brother of Alexander Sutherland called of Strabrock, the father of Christina." (page 195)

"His wife may have been the Janet Innes, 'Lady Greeship,' said to be a daughter of the family of Innes, and widow of a Laird of Duffus, who again married, some time before 1517, Hugh Rose of Kilravock." (page 196)

Note: Janet Innes married not the William Sutherland who died before his father, Alexander, but the son of that William who went on to inherit Duffus.

from Scots Peerage (vol 3) 1

Janet next married Hugh ROSE 8th of Kilravock, son of Hugh ROSE 7th of Kilravock and More MACINTOSH, by 1517.1 2 (Hugh ROSE 8th of Kilravock was born about 1445 and died on 17 March 1517 2.)

  Marriage Notes:

"I find this Hugh Rose of Kilravock maried Janet Innes, designed Ladie Greeship ; she was a daughter of the familie of Innes, and formerly maried with one of the Lairds of Duffus, and. as I conceave, sister in law to that Wiliam Sutherland of Berriedale, (whose daughter her husband maried first,) who, dying without heirs male, was succeeded to by his brother, first husband to this Janet Innes. Her lyfrent, if we compt it at our modern reckoning, was not great, for she discharges ..."

from Family of Rose of Kilravock

Note: It seems that William Sutherland of Berriedale was father-in-law, rather than brother in law to Janet Innes, and did in fact have a male heir. See marriage notes for Janet Innes and William Sutherland.
