"IX. Alexander (Forbes), married in 1661 Mariot, daughter of Burnett of Kemnay, and had one son, X. William "

from House of Forbes

Note:

Although the marriage narrative does not identify the bride with any family designation, it seems likely that this is the marriage the
House of Forbes is referencing. However there is a slight problem in naming her as a "daughter of Burnett of Kemnay" as the 1st Laird of Kemnay is considered to be Thomas, son of James Burnett of Craigmyle and Elizabeth Burnett, who was not chronologically likely to have been her father.

A footnote to page 113 of
The Family of Burnett of Leys lists offspring of James Burnett:

"
The Fetteresso parish register contains the baptisms of the following children of James Burnet of Craigmyle : - Robert (the Tutor of Leys), i8th April, 1620 ; Helen, 21st Januar)-, 1623 ; William, 10th February, 1624 ; Margaret, 9th September, 1625 ; George, 10th April, 1628 ; and John, 6th June, 1633."

This accords correctly with the present old parish registers index of baptisms at the GRO Scotland. However, the text then goes on to include, on page 114, two more daughters not on the parish registers, namely Jean and Mary, identifying Mary as the spouse of Alexander Forbes of Corsinday:

"Mary, married (sasine on marr. contr., 1661) Alexander Forbes of Corsinday - alluded to in a letter of Thomas Burnett of Kemnay (p. 123), died at Kemnay, and was buried at Midmar, 1st November, 1700"

The letter referred to in the quotation written by the 2nd laird of Kemnay in 1696 to the 3rd Baronet, nephew of the lady in question, does not actually specifically name Corsindae's wife, referring to her only as "his aunt Corsindae".

The shortened forms 'Mariet' and 'Mariot' were not used exclusively for the name Mary; examples can be found where they also are used for Margaret and Marjory, itself often written as Mariorie. Within the Burnett family Margaret is somewhat more common than Mary.
