  • Born: About 1660
  • Marriage (1): GORDON, Jean on 2 March 1717 in Edinburgh parish, Edinburgh, Scotland 1 2
  • Died: 27 February 1747 4

  General Notes:

"... leaving an only son, Alexander, to the guardianship of his great uncle and namesake, Alexander Gordon, the 'Tutor of Pitlurg.' Alexander, who sat as MP for Aberdeenshire in the first Union Parliament, suffered severe financial losses through his investment in the Mississippi scheme, and sold the estates of Pitlurg and Kinmundy in 1724."

Alexander inherited the estates of Pitlurg in 1682.

Alexander 8th of Pitlurg's son, also Alexander, an ensign with the British Army, died before his father, and after Alexander Gordon 8th of Pitlurg's death, the property passed to the grandson of the laird's uncle Dr John Gordon, who was Dr James Gordon of Hilton then Pitlurg, referred to in the Testament of the younger Alexander. 3 5 6

Alexander married Jean GORDON, daughter of Bailie James GORDON of Ellon, senior Merchant in Edinburgh, Jacobite 1715 and Bessie LIVINGSTON, on 2 March 1717 in Edinburgh parish, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 2 (Jean GORDON was baptised on 8 April 1702 in Canongate parish, Edinburgh, Scotland 7.)

"Edinburgh .. 1717 Marriages
2d March
Alexander Gordon of Pitlurg now in S. W parish and Mistris Margaret Gordon Lawfull Daughter to James Gordon Senior Merchant in S. E. parish"

Note: Other sources refer to the wife of Alexander Gordon 8th of Pitlurg as Jean. James Gordon, senior Edinburgh merchant, did have a daughter Margaret, but her year of birth would appear to make her too young for this marriage. Putting these together, it suggests it was a clerical error to have named the spouse as Margaret. 1 2
