  General Notes:

"1665. Jeane Ramsay summons Sir James Strachan of Thornetoun, complaining that, soon after the death of Ehzabeth Forbes, his wife, he had neglected his affairs, and abandoned his three children - James, Jean, and Strachan - whom the said Jean Ramsay, their grandmother, had taken in, and educated. She requires that he should make her an allowance for the same."

from Memoranda relating to the Family of Waterton 2

Jean married Thomas FORBES 1st of Waterton, son of William FORBES 8th of Tolquhon and Janet OGILVY.1 (Thomas FORBES 1st of Waterton was born about 1595 and died in 1652.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Forbes of Waterton, Parish of Ellon, Aberdeenshire

Virtute inimica quies - (Inactivity is an enemy to virtue).

The first of this family was Thomas Forbes, who inherited Waterton from his father- William Forbes of Tolquhon, in the parish of Tarves, Aberdeenshire, by his marriage in 1580 with J. Ogilvie of Banff. The Forbeses of Tolquhon, who were celebrated for their loyalty to the Stuarts, were one of the oldest and most influential branches of the noble family of Forbes - married Jean, sister of Sir Gilbert Ramsay, Baronet, of Balmain, and was slain by the Kennedys of Kermuck in 1652."

from Families of Moir and Byres

"Thomas Forbes, fourth son of William, 8th Laird of Tolquhon, received the lands of Waterton in Ellon from his father by sasine of December 9th, 1630. Failing heirs male of his body they were to go to his brothers. Four years later the fishing on the Ythan was also settled on him. He married Jean, daughter of David Ramsay of Balmain, and had four sons and seven daughters :

William, o.s.p. before his father. John, succeeded to Waterton. James of Savoch. Alexander, o.s.p. before his father.

Janet, married in 1650 Sir John Gilmour, advocate and President of the Court of Session. Jean, died unmarried (see Note below). Elizabeth, married 1654 Sir James Strachan of Thornton. Grizel, married 1666 John Douglas of Inchmarlo. Margaret, married 1664 James Brodie of Lethen. Isobel, married 1670 John Reid of Barra - portion £4000 Scots. Anne, married 1678 Andrew Middleton of Pitgarvie."

Note:

The Scots Peerage, vol. 3, disagrees with this. Or, there may have been two daughters named Jean, the elder of which died unmarried. 1 3
