The 1841 census for Glasgow St Mungo, Lanarkshire, recorded John Vally living with his family in Drygate Street. He was recorded as 9 years of age, the second eldest of five children, and had been born in Ireland. He worked in a cotton mill.

In 1851 John Valley was recorded living with his family at 4 Parliamentary Road Glasgow. He had been born in Ireland and was 20 years old. He worked as a factory clerk. 2 3 4
