"On the death of Archibald, Earl of Angus and Morton, in 1588, the estates and honours of Morton devolved upon Sir William, who thus became fifth EARL OP MORTON, and he had a charter on 20 June 1589 of the Castle of Dalkeith to his wife Agnes Leslie, and of the earldom of Morton to himself, with remainder to his four sons successively or any other heir-male of his body .... "

Note: William Douglas is generally now listed as 6th Earl of Morton. The 5th earldom was held briefly by John Maxwell, 8th Lord Maxwell, a grandson of the 3rd Earl, and was then granted to Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Morton, also 8th Earl of Angus, when his attainder was reversed in 1586. 1


William married Agnes LESLIE, daughter of George LESLIE 4th Earl of Rothes, Sheriff of Fife and Margaret CRICHTON, 19 August 1554(contract) married about 1565.1 (Agnes LESLIE was born about 1536.)

"He (Sir William Douglas) died 27 September 1606, having married, in or before 1565 (contract 19 August 1554, when he was a child) Agnes, daughter of George, fourth Earl of Rothes."

"Lady Agnes Leslie, married to Sir William Douglas of Lochleven... Sir William Douglas was created Earl of Morton. He got a charter to him and Lady Agnes Leslie, his spouse, of the earldom of Morton, 20th July 1589. The daughters of this marriage were so beautiful, that they were called the pearls of Lochleven."
