DESCENT OF MACWILLIAMS OF AUCHMORE

The individual represented by this file is unknow, and is a generation filler, based on the hypothesis that the MacWilliams of Auchmore were descended from the Stewarts of Ballechin..

If the William Stewart who was the father of David Stewart alias McWilliam of Auchmore was descended from the Stewarts of Ballechin as is claimed here:

"David (MacWilliam) was a branch of the Stewarts of Ballechin in Athole, and his grandfather, William (and hence the appellation of 'MacWilliam') left that country in consequence of a feud with some of this neighbours, and exchanged his property there with the Earl of Athole, who was then proprietor of Balveny and Pittvaich, the mill, and some of other lands about that place to be held in feu." (Gordons of Laggan and Achlochrach)

then it was very probably through an illegitimate line. The continued related use of the name William suggests reasonably that the MacWilliams might have descended from William Stewart of Ballechin, who seems not to have left any legitimate male issue. 1

Unknown married.
