  Research Notes:

1907 MEETING AT BANFF

This document is not reliable in many respects and the information from it, without corroboration, should be treated with caution.

The OPRs reported here as sources are historical documents and primary sources, but the interpretation of the descent of this woman as outlined below is as near as the dates allow for the family to be linked with those mentioned in the doument mentioned above. No other sources apart from the website quoted have been found to substantiate the version outlined in the 1907 Meeting at Banff paper. As with other areas of the paper, some statements do seem to be based on actual people which can be verified, but other statements do appear to conflate or confuse generations or families. In this case a Helen Burges of approximately the right age to marry Henry Gordon in Hardaugh, and in approximately the right place,
is a third daughter of a Charles Burges, but her mother was not Christian Forbes. Is she the one referred to? Research continues; other records may come to light to prove or disprove the document's assertions.

'Harry Gordon. He "lived first at Hardhaugh and afterwards at Boat of Bog, the name of the ferry across the Spey near Fochabers, now replace by a bridge. He married Helen Burges, the third daughter of Charles Burges at Clashdow, by Christian Forbes, daughter of John Forbes of Keithack. The Birnie MS calls Helen Burges the "near relation of Harry"...'

from Banffshire Field Club 1907 MEETING AT BANFF

Helen married Harry GORDON at Hardaugh, then at Boat of Bog, son of James GORDON 3rd of Achlochrach and Anne MACWILLIAM, before 28 December 1748.1 (Harry GORDON at Hardaugh, then at Boat of Bog was born about 1705.)

  Marriage Notes:

No marriage record has been found for Harry Gordon and helen Burges but the baptism record of their son, below, indicates a lawful marriage:

Old Parish Registers
Mortlach parish Banffshire
Baptisms

"Harry Gordon. He 'lived first at Hardhaugh and afterwards at Boat of Bog, the name of the ferry across the Spey near Fochabers, now replace by a bridge. He married Helen Burges, the third daughter (see Note below) of Charles Burges at Clashdow, by Christian Forbes, daughter of John Forbes of Keithack"

from Gordons of Laggan and Achlochrach

Note:

Harry Gordon did marry Helen Burges, and she was the third daughter of a Charles Burges, but her mother was not Christian Forbes. The dates suggest that Helen could not have been the daughter of Christian Forbes.

It is likely that Charles Burges and Christian Forbes were Helen's grandparents.

The dates are problematic with the whole family line, so it is not difficult to see how generations were confused. There may be missing links, and the present configuration should be treated with caution.
