  Research Notes:

CLASHDOW

There is a Clashdow listed as being located in Knockando parish, Moray:

"Clashdow. From the Gaelic Clais, a ditch, and dubh, black. The black ditch or valley."

from Place Names of Elgin 2

Charles married Christian FORBES, daughter of John FORBES of Keithack and Jane GORDON.1 (Christian FORBES was born about 1665.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Harry Gordon. He 'lived first at Hardhaugh and afterwards at Boat of Bog', the name of the ferry across the Spey near Fochabers, now replace by a bridge. He married Helen Burges, the third daughter of Charles Burges at Clashdow, by Christian Forbes, daughter of John Forbes of Keithack. The Birnie MS calls Helen Burges the 'near relation of Harry,' and says that the latter left one son and one daughter."

from Gordons of Laggan and Achlochrach

Note:

Some of the generational details in this paper are apparently erroneous, but that does not mean we should dismiss all of its information out of hand.

Harry Gordon did marry Helen Burges, and she was the third daughter of a Charles Burges, but her mother was not Christian Forbes. The dates suggest that Helen could not have been the daughter of Christian Forbes.

It is likely that Charles Burges and Christian Forbes were Helen's grandparents.

The dates are problematic with the whole family line, so it is not difficult to see how generations were confused. There may be missing links, and the present configuration should be treated with caution until more documentary evidence is forthcoming.
