  General Notes:

"Salterhill passed from the hands of this Irish-parson group of Gordons (James Gordon in Comber) into that of James Gordon, mason and burgess of Inverness, from whom its superior, the laird of Gordonstown, had borrowed money. He had no son, his three daughters being served heir to him. It then came into the keeping of an Alexander Gordon, who is said (though I cannot prove it) to have been a greatgrandson of Sir Alexander Gordon of Lesmoir."

  Research Notes:

SALTERHILL

The family of Alexander Gordon of Salterhill listed here are what Bulloch calls the 'second group who owned it' that 'are now represented by the Gordons of Cluny and of Cairnfield'.

RELATIONSHIPS

Bulloch presents John Gordon of Kineddar as the father of the later Alexander Gordon of Salterhill. However, as in some other works of Bulloch, his studies in this branch of the Gordons, though of immense and irreplaceable value, were not complete. The dates do not appear to support the relationship he posits. The elder John Gordon of Kineddar was baptised in 1644. Alexander Gordon of Salterhill's child was born in 1667. The dating suggests that John and Alexander were brothers, and that they, like the earlier Elspeit, born in 1639, and Issobel, born in 1646, were children of James Gordon of Kineddar. Some of the legal references that Bulloch quotes may relate to the son of Alexander, also Alexander, born in 1677.

John Gordon of Kineddar did also have a son called Alexander born in 1675. While the legal references supplied by Bulloch might possibly have applied to him, the parish register baptismal records could not, for example the baptism of daughter Lucrece Gordon in Drainie parish in 1671.

DESCENT

It's worth considering whether a confusion between "Kineddar" and "Kinellar" is at the root of the suggestion that this Alexander was related to Alexander Gordon of Lesmoir. John Gordon of Kinellar was a brother of a later Alexander Gordon of Lesmoir, both born about 1680. There may still have been partial truth, however, in that Alexander was of the Lesmoir family. 1

Alexander married Isobel KING, daughter of John KING in Plewlands and Unknown.1 (Isobel KING was born about 1644 and died on 21 February 1711 in Kinneddar, Drainie, Moray, Scotland 1.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Alexander Gordon (of Salterhill) married Isobella King, Plewlands, who died in February, 1711..."
