  Research Notes:

GIVEN NAME

There has been quite a mystery about the given name of this woman. Her marriage record does not help in this regard, although it does identify her family. Having found the family to which she belonged, we find there were four sisters.

Barbara married Robert Gordon of Lunan, so we can eliminate Barbara as her name. Of the remaining three, Margaret was baptised in 1683, and since John Gordon of Cluny was probably born about 1694-1695, Margaret may have been a little too young to be his mother. That leaves a choice between Elizabeth, born in 1667 and Lucrece, born in 1671.

Lucrece has been chosen for two reasons. The first is that even if the name had been forgotten, it may have been more typically memorable that it was the
eldest daughter who was the daughter in question, whereas Lucrece would have been 'one of the others'. Secondly, and more importantly, the name 'Lucrece' has a very direct link with the Gordons of Gordonstoun, one of whom, Robert, 'got' Cluny. John Gordon, the son of this mystery woman, was extremely keen to be John Gordon 'of Cluny. As Bulloch comments:

'With all his wealth and the acquisition of Cluny, there was possibly a great desire in John Gordon's mind to found a family which should continue the traditions of the old Gordons of Cluny. This desire was clearly stated by his grandson, also John Gordon, who laid it down in one of his testamentary injunctions that the holder of the estate should be known as "Gordon of Cluny," much on the analogy of the famous '"Ross-of-Bladensburg." ' 3 6

Lucrece married James GORDON 'in Botar' on 1 August 1695 in Drainie parish, Moray, Scotland.1 2 (James GORDON 'in Botar' was born about 1665.)
