William and his wife, Elizabeth McNaught had married in Kelton Manse in 1848 and had four sons living. Elizabeth Tweedie, maiden surname McNaught, was 32 years of age and had been born in Kelton parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. James was her fourth child.

Elizabeth Tweedie was recorded by the 1861 census living in Castle Douglas Kirkcudbright with her husband and four children of 11 years and under. She was 37 years of age and had been born in Kelton parish. ^{1 4}
