In the 1851 census, Archibald was recorded as a house carpenter by occupation. He is also referred to in My Dear Nephew as a stonemason who took over the building of the RC Church at Tomintoul after the departure of Father Donald Carmichael in 1839.

Archibald Carmichael, husband, who had been present where his wife died, gave notice of Christina's death on 7 August 1874 at Maryculter.

Archibald Carmichael died in 1885. In his death certificate he was recorded as a master joiner, "Widower of Christina Amelia Gordon" and aged 84 years. His parents were deceased. 2 3 4 5 9

  Research Notes:

OCCUPATION

"After his removal to Blairs, Carmichael (Reverend Donald Carmichael, Archibald's uncle) entrusted the overseeing and completion of the chapel to his nephew, Archibald (1801-85), father of both young Donald and the Archibald who wrote the conversion account). Archibald was a stonemason who had already been involved in much of the construction. He sent regular updates to his uncle about progress or, more often than not, lack of progress in the completion. Problems with weather, unreliable suppliers and occasionally a recalcitrant workforce (who were nonetheless, as can be seen below, periodically and inconveniently reminded of their religious obligations) beset the project. These can be traced in more detail in the Tomintoul collection, IM 29, at the Scottish Catholic Archives, a collection which also contains many orders, receipts, subscription lists etc., indicating just what a considerable amount of work was involved in the building of the church. One typical example can be gleaned from the following letter, written by Archibald to Carmichael on 30 March 1837:

Dear Uncle, there has been very little done to the Chapel since youleft us - there has only been three fresh days since that time and not a mason appeared to finish what was to be done this season except Angus who is very busy . . . I could not do more than I did to induce
Donald Cameron to attend when he could, it was more agreeable to him to be [illegible] of old houses than finish a Chapel however he appeared this day but learning by the way that it was a holy day he did not work."
