"Gideon Guthrie, born at Castleton of Fordoun, 24th May 1663, second son of Harry G. of Halkerton in Angus, and Margaret, daugh. of David Sibbald of Kair, and Jean, daugh. of Sir David Auchmouty ; educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen ; licen. by Presb. of Mearns Sept. 1688; had calls to Grange and Aboyne, but 'the Committee of the Kirk coming North, anno 1694, defeated me.' He intruded at Glenmuick Dec. 1697 to May 1698, and after spending some years as tutor to the sons of William, ninth Earl Marischal (one of his pupils becoming the famous Marshal Keith), he was settled in this charge 26th Dec. 1703 ; was required to give up the keys of the church 21st March 1705. He intruded afterwards at Brechin in 1709 and was forbidden to preach or exercise any part of the ministry within that parish under pain of 500 merks, and further declared incapable for seven years of any post or benefice in Scotland, fined 1000 merks and ordered to go to prison till payment. Instead of doing so, he and John Skinner assumed possession of the pulpit during the Jacobite Rising in 1715. He was dep. 3rd Oct. 1716, afterwards went to Edinburgh, and was subsequently at Carmylie; died in 1732. He marr. 1706, Anne (born 1671, died 7th Feb. 1727), daugh. of Andrew Melvin or Melville, min. of Morham, and had issue - William, author of a Historical and Geographical Grammar, a History of England, and a General History of Scotland, born 7th Jan. 1708, died 9th March 1770; Harry, writer, Edinburgh, born 5th Jan. 1709, died 5th June 1794 ; Margaret, born 13th Sept. 1711, died 7th Aug. 1715; Isobel. born 3rd May 1713, died 14th Sept. 1714. - [Black's Brechin, 127 ; Gideon Guthrie, a Monograph [edited by C.
