Catherine Donnelly was aged 31 years, like her husband, when the 1861 census for Shotts parish recorded her living at 31 Omoa Square, with her family. She had four children aged from 1 year to 10 years. The family also had one lodger, Patrick Vallely. Catherine had been born in Ireland.

'Donnelly' was recorded in her daughter, Mary Jane's marriage certificate of 1872 as both the maiden surname and the married surname of Catherine Donnelly.

Catherine Donnelly was recorded by the 1881 census as 50 years of age and living at 4 Wyndedge Farm, Cleland, in the parish of Shotts. She had been born in Ireland. She had six children at home, aged from 9 years to 23 years, to care for, as well as a visitor, John Donnelly, aged 60 years.

When Catherine Donnelly died in 1884, her recorded age at death was 57 years. Her death certificate also recorded her as married to Patrick Donnelly coalminer. Both of her parents were dead. Her death certificate, on the basis of information provided by her son, recorded her parents as Charles Donnelly and Agnes Connor. 2 3 4 7

Catherine's husband, Patrick Donnelly, who had been present, gave notice of her death before the registrar, William Spence, at Cleland on 30 June 1884 and made his X mark. 4


Catherine married Patrick DONNELLY on 10 January 1848 in Clonoe, County Tyrone, Ireland.1 (Patrick DONNELLY was born in 1827 in Ireland 3 8 9 and died on 6 June 1892 in Hareshaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland 9.). The cause of his death was mining accident while working, aged 65.4
