The 1871 census recorded Catherine as 18 years old, and a paper mill worker.

Catherine was the second wife of Patrick McGunnigal. In the 1881 census she was living, with him and six year old James, next door to James and Margaret McGunnigal, Patrick's parents, in Biggar Road, Chapelhall. She was aged 26 years.

The 1891 census recorded Cathrine McGunnigal living with her husband and three children at Paddock Street, Coatbridge. Her age was recorded as 31 years, and she had been born in Bothwell parish.

In 1901 the census recorded Catherine McGunnigal living at 14 Clyde Square in Old Monkland West district. Her age was recorded as 45 years and her birthplace as Bothwell parish.

In her 1939 death certificate Catherine McGunnigal was recorded as aged 81 years and the "Widow of Patrick McGunnigal, Commission Agent." She died in Greenock but her usual residence was 37 Riddrie Street, Coatbridge. Her parents, John Welsh and Catherine Morrow, were deceased.
