  General Notes:

Margaret's parents were not married at the time of her birth, so her birth certificate labelled her as illegitimate, even though both her father and mother signed their relationship to her on the birth certificate, and did subsequently marry. Margaret's father was a furnace assistant and her mother was a papermill worker. Her father, James, was able to sign his name on the birth certificate; her mother Mary made her X mark. James gave his place of residence as Chapelhall. The birth was registered at New Monkland on 26 September 1881, before John Macarthur registrar.

"Margaret (born) Sep. 9 (parents) Jas. MacGonigal & Mary Rourke (baptism) Oct. 26 (sponsor) Mrs Barret

In 1891 census Maggie McGonegal was recorded living at Briggate, Chapelhall with her mother, her new stepfather, James Hammill, her new step brother, John Hammill, and her own three siblings. She was aged 9 years, a scholar, and had been born in Clarkston.

In 1905 Maggie was a witness at the marriage of her sister, Sarah, to George Rogan in Chapelhall.

Margaret's death certificate recorded her as aged 49 years, although in fact she had turned 50. She was survived by her husband, James. Because her death was a sudden one, it was referred to the Procurator Fiscal's office as is usual in such circumstances, and there exists an entry in the Register of Corrected Entries pertaining to it, signed by D. J. Henry on 13 January 1932. Margaret's age was noted in that report as 50 years; the time of her death was recorded as 4.05 am; Bellside became Bailside. Other than this the details were the same. 3 4 5 8

  Medical Notes:

Margaret was seen after her death by J. McFarlane MB ChB to certify the causes of death.

Her husband, James, who had been present where his wife's death occurred, informed the registrar at Holytown, Gil Hamilton, on 24 December 1931, of his wife's death, and signed the register.

In the Register of Corrected entries, cardiac failure was recorded as the main cause of death.

Margaret married James GOLLOGLY on 11 February 1909 in St Aloysius RC Church, Chapelhall, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (James GOLLOGLY was born on 26 December 1876 in County Armagh, Ireland 9 10 and died 15 April 1948 at 4.15 pm in 65 George Street, Chapelhall, Lanarkshire, Scotland 9.). The cause of his death was coronary thrombosis over 2 years 4 months.

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place, after banns, according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The celebrating priest was Father Donald A. McPherson. The witnesses to the marriage were James Myles and Sarah O'Rorke.

Maggie was an unmarried woman aged 27 years, of Main Street, Chapelhall. She worked as a domestic servant. Her father had died when Maggie was a small child and her mother had remarried.

James was a bachelor of 30 years, of 17 Stone Row, Calderbank, and was a steel worker. Like Maggie, his father was dead and his mother still alive.

The marriage was registered on 23 February 1909, the registrar being Gilbert Hamilton. 1
