General Notes:
When James was born in 1883, his father, also James, was an assistant blast furnace keeper. The registrar, William Richard, at Holytown, was notified of his birth on 10 March 1883 by the baby's maternal grandfather, Francis Rourke, who made his X mark. Francis gave his address as Brown's Land Clarkston.
In the 1891 census, James McGonegal was recorded, aged 8 years, as a scholar living in 133 Briggate, Chapelhall. He had been born in Bothwell Parish, and as well as his own three siblings, he now had a new half brother, John, and a step father, James Hammill.
In the census of 1901, James, along with his brother Francis, were the only McGunigals resident in the household of Mary Hammill, at Bo'ness Road, Chapelhall. Three half brothers of theirs, John, Patrick and Hugh Hammill, also lived there. James was recorded as aged 18 years, and as having been born in Chapelhall. He worked as a 'coal miner hewer'.
The 1911 census recorded James McGunigal, a single man, living in his mother's household in Main Street, Chapelhall. He was 27 years old, and born in Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire. He worked as a "Coal Miner, Hewer".
In October 1911 James was a witness at the marriage of his brother Francis.
James married in 1913 at the age of 30 years, although his age was noted as 33 years.
James notified the registrar within two days of the birth of his first child, Mary, in 1914. He signed the book, and gave his occupation as coal miner.
His daughter, Margaret's birth took place in Chapelhall in 1915, and James was the informant, as he was in March 1916 when she died. He was then a coal miner.
In 1916 his daughter, Mary, died aged 2 years. James was the informant before the registrar, at Holytown, on 18 April 1916. His occupation was recorded as coal miner.
In 1917 James' daughter, Sarah, died aged 11 months. James notified the registrar at Holytown in December 1917. He was recorded as a coal miner.
In 1923, a second daughter named Mary died aged 9 months. James was the informant of her death, at Holytown, on 16 May. His occupation was noted as coal miner.
In 1924 his wife died in Blantyre. Her death certificate recorded James then as a coal miner.
James died in 1939. His death certificate recorded his age as 56 years at the time of his death. He was recorded as a coal miner (brusher), and the widower of Mary Mulvaney. His usual residence was noted as 21 Kennelburn Road, Chapelhall. Both of his own parents were deceased by then.

The marriage was celebrated, after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The officiating priest was Father Thomas Hackett. The witnesses were Patrick Hamill and Mary Boyle.
James McGunnigle was a coal pit brusher, aged 33 years, of Hillside Terrace, Chapelhall. He was a bachelor. He signed the marriage book.
Mary Mulvanny was a farm servant, aged 34 years, of 103 Stonefield Road, Blantyre. She too was a single woman and signed her name. her parents were Patrick Mulvanny and Mary McGough.
The registration of the marriage was at Blantyre on 4 April 1913, the registrar being James Brown. 1
