When Arthur was born in 1878 his father Michael was the informant of his birth before William Spence, registrar, at Cleland on 16 October 1878 and made his X mark.

In 1881, the census recorded Arthur McConachy, aged 3 years, living with his family at Greenhill Village in Shotts parish, the parish of his birth.

Arthur McConnaghy was aged 13 years in 1891, and was employed as a message boy. He had been born in Shotts parish.

The 1901 census for the western district of Shotts Lanarkshire recorded Arthur McConnachie as head of the household at 49 Omoa Square, in Cleland. The only other member of his household was his new wife, Ellan. They lived in a dwelling, one of whose rooms was windowed. Arthur worked as a coal miner. He was 22 years of age, and had been born in the parish.

When Arthur McConnachie died in 1950, his recorded age at death was 71 years. His death certificate noted that his surname had formerly been 'McConnochie', and that he was a retired coal miner brusher, married to Ellen Curran. His usual residence was 4 Gibb Street, Cleland. His parents were deceased. 3 4 5

Arthur McConnachie, son of the deceased man who had also lived at 4 Gibb Street, Cleland, gave notice of his father's death before the registrar, J. McIntyre, at Carluke, on 26 May 1950. 4


Arthur married Ellen CURRAN, daughter of Thomas CURRAN and Mary Jane LAMOND, on 31 January 1901 in RC Chapel, Cleland, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Ellen CURRAN was born 23 April 1882 at 4.00 am in 4 Omoa Square, Cleland, Lanarkshire, Scotland 1 6 and died on 17 July 1955 in 56 Mooreland Gardens, West Calder, West Lothian, Scotland 7.). The cause of her death was cardiac, asthma, diabetes.4


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated, after banns, according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest was Father Hugh Kelly. The witnesses were Joseph Duffy and Mary Dolan.

Arthur McConnachie was a coal miner by occupation. He was unmarried, aged 22 years, and lived at 22 Omoa Square, Cleland, in the West District of Shotts parish. His father was deceased.

Ellen Curran was 19 years old and single. No occupation was noted for her. She lived at 19 Omoa Square. Her father, too, was deceased.

The marriage was registered at Cleland on 2 February 1901, William McGill being the signing registrar. 1
