In the Church Baptism Record (see above) transcribed and made available by the Irish Family History Foundation, Thomas Vallely's address was recorded as Gortin, County Tyrone, Ireland. The baptism took place in Dungannon parish. The child's parents were recorded as Charles Vallely and Sara Briens. There were two entries for Sponsor. The first was 'Jo', and the second was Mar McEnally.

Thomas was an unmarried man when recorded in the 1851 census living with his widowed mother in 31 Baird's Square New Monkland parish, Scotland. He was 18 years old and a coal miner.

In the 1855 birth certificate of his daughter, Bridget, Thomas was recorded as a collier aged 21 years, who had been born in County Tyrone Ireland. He had married his wife in Airdrie in 1854.

Thomas Valloly was the informant of the birth of his daughter Sarah Valloly in Rawyards, New Monkland parish. He gave notice of her birth before the registrar, John Macarthur, on 8 February 1858 and made his X mark. Thomas was recorded as a collier by occupation.

The 1861 census for Bathgate in West Lothian recorded Thomas and Helen Valellay and their three children living in a household at 5 Mount Pleasant in the village of Armadale, along with five other males, the youngest of whom, Robert McCann, was a relative. The other four were boarders, namely John Gemmell, Alex McCuan, Patrick McGarity and Francis Shields, ranging in age from 17 to 26 years. All, including McCann, who was 13 years old, were coal miners; most were born in Ireland, except for McCann who was born in Boston Ayrshire, and McEwan who was born in Doune Stirlingshire. Thomas Valellay head of the household, was also a coal miner and had been born in Ireland. His age was noted as 28 years. 3 4 9 10

1. Witness at marriage: of Francis Corrigan & Mary McGinnis, 3 March 1851, St Mary's RC Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. 11 The other witness to the marriage was Bridget McGinnis and the presiding priest was Father Michael Condon.


Thomas married Helen WARD on 15 August 1854 in St Margaret's RC Church, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 2 (Helen WARD was born in 1835 in County Down, Ireland 4.)


  Marriage Notes:

Fr Duncan McNab married Thomas and Helen. The witnesses were Alex Hamel and Agnes Hughes.

The earlier date in New Monkland parish records recorded in the IGI was the date of the banns of marriage.
