James Early was recorded by the 1871 census for Hamilton living in the household of his uncle, William Sherry, at 11 Low Patrick Street, with his parents and two siblings. He was recorded as 11 years of age and had been born in Hamilton.

The 1881 census for Hamilton recorded James Early aged 21 years living at his parents' home at 3 New Wynd. He worked as a coal miner and was unmarried. James had been born in Hamilton. ^{2 4}
