Agnes' birth certificate of 1863 contains no father's name, only her mother's, and the label 'illegitimate' was recorded on it as a result. The informant of her birth was her maternal grandmother, Sarah Feely, who had been present where the birth took place, and who made her X mark. She gave notice of the birth before the registrar, Duncan Campbell, on 9 February 1863 at Bankhouse, Lesmahagow. 2
