The 1841 census for Paisley Middle recorded 'Marget Hammon' living with her husband William at 44 Moss Street. She had been born in Scotland and was in the 30-34 years age range.

The 1851 census for Paisley recorded Margaret Hummond [sic] living with her husband William at 107 Causewayside Street. Margaret was a dressmaker by occupation and was aged 46 years. Her birthplace was recorded as Glasgow Lanarkshire.

In 1861 the census for Paisley Low Church recorded Margaret Hamman [sic] living with her husband at 16 Causeyside Street in Paisley. They had three boarders living with them. Margaret was recorded as aged 56 years and was a dressmaker. She had been born in Glasgow.

Margaret Hamman was the informant of her husband William's death in 1862. She gave notice at Paisley before the registrar, Robert Donald, and made her X mark.

Margaret Hammond had become a widow and head of her own household by the time the 1871 census was taken. She still lived at 16 Causeyside Street Paisley but she lived alone. Her age was recorded as 67 years and her birthplace as Glasgow.

The 1881 census recorded Margaret Hammon [sic], aged 76 years, a widow. Her place of birth was given as Glasgow Lanarkshire. She was living with her niece Isabella McKillop and Isabella's daughter Margaret at 9 Wellgate Street Dalserf in Lanarkshire. It was noted that Margaret had formerly been a dressmaker. There was a shoemaker's shop next door to them and on the other side a licensed grocer's. Nearby were a hotel, a hat and cap merchant, a china merchant and weavers.

Margaret died in 1883. In her death certificate she was recorded as 'widow of William Hammond spirit merchant'. She was recorded then as aged 80 years. Both of her parents were deceased. 4 6 7 8 11 12 13

No medical attendant saw Margaret.

Margaret's niece, Isabella McKillop of 3 Wellgate, Larkhall, gave notice of Margaret's death before the registrar at Paisley, Hugh Allison, on 29 May 1883, and made her X mark. 5

Margaret married William HAMMOND, son of Noble HAMMAN and Mary McLUSKIE, on 8 April 1823 in St Mirin's RC Chapel, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.1 2 (William HAMMOND was born in 1801 in Ireland 6 7 and died 11 October 1862 at 11.15 pm in 16 Causeyside Street, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland 6.). The cause of his death was chronic bronchitis over 10 years.5


  Marriage Notes:

This marriage was recorded in the St Mirin's Paisley parish records of the Roman Catholic Church as having taken place on the 8 April 1823. William Caven, RC priest officiated. The witnesses were Patrick Devine and Mary McKinlay.

The banns were called within the established church parish of Abbey Paisley and a certificate to that effect granted by the session clerk. 2
