  General Notes:

The 1841 census for Paisley Middle recorded William Hammon [sic] and his wife Marget [sic] living at 44 Moss Street. William was in the 30 to 34 years age range, and had been born in Ireland. He was a labourer by occupation.

William Hummond [sic] was recorded by the 1851 census as head of the household, consisting of himself and his wife, at 107 Causewayside Street Paisley. William was recorded as aged 50 years and as born in Ireland. He was formerly a labourer.

The 1861 census for Paisley Low Church Renfrewshire recorded William Hamman [sic] as head of a household living at 16 Causeyside Street. In the household were William and his wife Margaret Hamman and three boarders. The boarders were Thomas McNair, a widower aged 57 years who worked as a silk weaver and was born in Renfrewshire; Thomas Harkness, also a widower aged 40 years, and also a silk weaver and born in Renfrewshire; and George Johnson, an unmarried man of 22 years who was a iron turner and had been born in Ireland. William was aged 60 years and had been born in Ireland. He was a 'linnen and loom weaver'.

William Hammond died in 1862. His death certificate recorded his occupation as 'labourer' and noted that he was 'married to Margaret Lynnas'. His recorded age at death was 65 years. Both of his parents were deceased.

William died before his wife Margaret. In her death certificate she was described as 'widow of William Hammond spirit merchant'. 3 4 5 6 7 8

  Research Notes:

WILLIAM'S AGE

The scant evidence we have about when William was born is contradictory. We know he was married in 1823, yet the 1841 census puts him in the 30-34 year age group. This would mean he was married aged between 12 years and 16 years. His wife was also placed in this group, yet other evidence puts Margaret consistently as born about 1804-1805, even 1803 possibly.

It seems more likely that William should have been placed in the 35-39 years age group in 1841, giving him a minimum age at marriage of 17 years. He would then have been born between 1802-1806.

The census of 1861 recorded him as 60 years of age, giving a birth time of 1800-1801.
When he died in 1862 he was recorded as 65 years old, giving birth years of 1796-1797.
It is not unusual for age at death to be overestimated -people may look and feel older.

Therefore 1800-1802 seems an acceptable estimate.

  Medical Notes:

Robert Falconer surgeon certified the cause of death.

Margaret Hamman, the widow, who was present, gave notice of William's death before the registrar, Robert Donald, at Paisley on 14 October 1862 and made her X mark. 5

William married Margaret LYNES, daughter of Arthur LINESS and Isabella DONNLEY, on 8 April 1823 in St Mirin's RC Chapel, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.1 2 (Margaret LYNES was born in 1804 in Glasgow, Scotland 3 4 6 8, baptised on 16 September 1804 in St Andrew's RC Chapel, Glasgow, Scotland and died 27 May 1883 at 3.00 pm in 18 North Croft, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland 8 9.). The cause of her death was old age.5

  Marriage Notes:

This marriage was recorded in the St Mirin's Paisley parish records of the Roman Catholic Church as having taken place on the 8 April 1823. William Caven, RC priest officiated. The witnesses were Patrick Devine and Mary McKinlay.

The banns were called within the established church parish of Abbey Paisley and a certificate to that effect granted by the session clerk. 2
