James's father was the informant at his birth before William Moffat, the registrar, at Hamilton on 14 June 1866. He made his X mark. The registrar wrote his name as Matthew Tweedley.

In the 1871 census, James was recorded as a pre-school child living with an older brother and two younger sisters in Iron Work Square in Galston. He was aged 4 years and lived in a house with one windowed room. ⁷
