Elizabeth McGrath, the baby's mother, gave notice of his birth before Peter Jarvis, registrar, at Baillieston on 31 May 1855. James was his mother's seventh child, although only he and a brother and sister were alive in 1855.

James McGrath was baptized by Father Michael O'Keeffe on 3 June 1855. His godparents were John Tolan and Mary Cavanagh.

The 1861 census for Baillieston recorded James McGraw, aged 5, years living with his father, sister and brothers. His birthplace was recorded as Baillieston. 2 3

BAILLIESTON

Baillieston was then part of Old Monkland parish, and Braehead was the site of a colliery there, where James McGrath's father worked as a collier.
