  General Notes:

In his son James's birth certificate, Samuel McKelvie was recorded as a power loom lace weaver. It was he who informed the registrar, Allan Jackson, at Newmilns, on 20 September 1888 of his son's birth.

On 7 October 1890 he notified the same registrar of his daughter, Annie's birth. The detail of his occupation was exactly the same there.

In the 1891 census Samuel was a lace weaver, aged 22 years and born in Newmilns.

Samuel's biographical information provided by the 1901 census was the same as earlier. By 1901 the couple had five young children. 2 3


Samuel married Agnes QUIGLEY, daughter of Michael QUIGLY and Ann WOOD, on 12 July 1888 in Chapel Lane, Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (Agnes QUIGLEY was born 13 September 1868 at 6 pm in 22 Henrietta Street, Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland 2 3 5 6 7 8 and died 12 June 1903 at 11.15 pm in High Street, Newmilns, Ayrshire, Scotland 9.). The cause of her death was phtisis pulmonalis of 4 months duration.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was conducted according to the forms of the Church of Scotland, the minister being James Allan Hogg. The witnesses were John Young and Catherine Quigley. The registrar who recorded the marriage James C. Hutchison.

Agnes Quigley, the bride, was aged 20 years and a cotton winder. This was her first marriage and she gave her address as Chapel Lane Galston. The witness Catherine Quigley was probably her sister of that name.

The groom Samuel McKelvie was aged 21 years, of Main Street Newmilns, Loudon parish. He was a Lace Weaver, and had never been married before. His father was deceased. John Young may have been a cousin on his mother's side, whose maiden name was Young.
