The 1841 census recorded Gilmour aged 9 years and living with his parents and brothers and sisters in Galston. He like them was born in the county.

The 1851 census for Riccarton recorded Gilmour living at Portland Row, Hurlford, with his brother Montgomery and his family. Gilmour's birth place was recorded as Galston and his age as 19 years. He was unmarried and was a coal miner. However, there was a child called 'Elizebeth Brown' aged 3 years who was inscribed as 'daughter' of the head of the house'. Another Elizebeth Steven was also aged 3 years and inscribed 'daughter'. It is possible that Elizebeth Brown was related to Gilmour Steven and Margaret Brown.

The 1861 census recorded Gilmour Steven, his wife Margaret and five of their children living in Henrietta Street, Galston. Gilmour was a coal miner of 28 years and had been born in Galston. ^{4 5}
