Mary was born before the marriage of her parents. The registrar was informed of her birth by her maternal uncle, Robert Feely, who made his X mark.

Mary may very well be the child aged 4 years who was recorded by the 1881 census in the household of her mother, Jane's first cousin, Robert Feely and his wife Mary Grimes or Graham, in Hamilton. In the census entry Mary Feely is designated as Mary Grimes Feely's granddaughter, and her birthplace as Hamilton. As yet no such actual granddaughter has been found.

In the 1891 census there is recorded a Mary Pheely, aged 15 years and born in Hamilton, who is styled the granddaughter of the widowed Mary (Grimes) Pheely. This may be the same girl mentioned in the 1881 census above. ^{1 2 3}
