Joseph Adams, gave notice of the death of his son, Thomas, before the registrar, George Noble, at Pathhead on 22 January 1864 and made his X mark. He was recorded as a labourer by occupation.

BORTHWICK AND CRICHTON

Borthwick is located to the north of the Moorfoot Hills, on the banks of the Gore Water, two miles south-east of Gorebridge. Crichton is located on the B6367, one and a half miles south of Pathhead and two miles east of Gorebridge. The manse and the church of Borthwick are situated in an elevated location above the Tyne Water Valley. The manse is of an unpretentious Georgian style, tucked in and concealed by trees and walls. The surrounding area is of a settled farming and agricultural character.

Joseph married Mary ADAMS, daughter of Thomas ADAMS (DNA Linked) and Sarah McMILLAN (DNA Linked), on 8 November 1859 in Borthwick Manse, Borthwick, Midlothian, Scotland.1 (Mary ADAMS was born about 1829 in Ireland and died in 1864 3.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was solemnised after banns at Borthwick Manse according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The Minister at Borthwick, James Reid, conducted the ceremony. The witnesses were Jane Reid and John McClure.

Joseph Adams, the bridegroom, made his X mark. He was aged 28 years and resident at Tynehead. He was a single man and worked as a labourer. He was 'Cousin German' to the bride.

Mary Adams was recorded as 30 years of age and was also unmarried. She too was resident at Tynehead. No occupation was noted for her.

The marriage was registered on 22 November 1859 at Borthwick, Alexander MacDougall being the registrar. 2
