  General Notes:

The 1861 census for Crichton, Midlothian, recorded James Adams as grocer and head of a common lodging house. He was 34 years old and had been born in Ireland. He lived at Pathhead in the parish of Crichton with his wife and son, John, and a number of lodgers, principally named Camble, with one called Lawson.

In 1871 the census for Edinburgh recorded James Adam as head of a small household living on the north side at 190 Cowgate. James was recorded as a provision merchant and a widower. He was 41 years of age and had been born in Ireland. Apart from himself, the household consisted of a boarder, John Bruce, an unmarried man aged 20 years, who worked as a grocer, and was Irish born, and a visitor, Thomas Adam, the father in law of James Adam. 3 5


James married Jane ADAMS, daughter of Thomas ADAMS (DNA Linked) and Sarah McMILLAN (DNA Linked), on 10 December 1855 in Borthwick Manse, Borthwick, Midlothian, Scotland.1 (Jane ADAMS was born about 1827 in County Armagh, Ireland 2 4.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. Cathcart Leslie, minister of Borthwick, married the couple. The witnesses were John Adams and David Adams.

James Adams, who made his X mark, was resident at Tynehead. He was 23 years old and was a labourer. He had been born in County Armagh.

Jane Adams also made her X mark. Jane was 28 years of age and was a widow. She had one child living from her first marriage. Her address was also Tynehead, She was a shopkeeper. Like the groom, she had been born in County Armagh.

The marriage was registered at Borthwick on 11 December 1855, the registrar being Alexander MacDougall. 2
