HAY, Joanna 1

  • Born: about 1510(1511)
  • Marriage (1): MOWAT, Magnus of Loscragy, then Balquholly 1

   User ID: F39.

Joanna married Magnus MOWAT of Loscragy, then Balquholly, son of John MOWAT of Loscragy and Freswick and Unknown.1 (Magnus MOWAT of Loscragy, then Balquholly was born about 1480 and died by 1 December 1526 1.)

  Marriage Notes:

Magnus Mowat is said to have married a daughter of Hay of Delgaty:

"Magnus Mowat, of Loscragy/Balquholly. Died in 1526 between 8 August and 1 December. According to an ancestor chart from 1674 he was married to Joanna Hay, daughter of Sir Alexander Hay of Delgaty."

Note:
Based on a charter under the Great Seal, it is thought that Alexander Hay, 4th of Ardendraught and Delgaty married Elizabeth Abernethy about 1510. This being so it is not feasible that their daughter would have been mother of Patrick Mowat of Balquholly, said to have been born in 1511. If Magnus Mowat did marry 'Joanna Hay', and it was she who was the mother of Patrick Mowat, then she is likely to have been a sister of Alexander Hay, and not his daughter. Or, as here, she may have been his daughter and married Magnus Mowat as a second wife, immediately before his death.
