Francis was recorded as aged 10 years by the 1841 census for Haddington. He had been born in East Lothian.

In 1851 he was the eldest child of 6 children living with his mother, a widow, at Poldrate, Haddington. He was recorded as aged 20 years, unmarried, and a tailor by employment. Haddington was his birthplace.

Francis married Alexander NISBET Mason, son of Francis NISBET Flesher and Euphemia THOMSON, in 1686. (Alexander NISBET Mason was born on 15 Sep 1801 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland and died between 1846 and 1851.)
