Mary Macafferty's birth was notified by her father Charles. He gave notice before the registrar, John Fairlie, at Balfron on 26 October 1855.

Mary McCafferty was recorded by the 1861 census living in the household of her grandparents, Michal and Mary Quglie, in Balfron Stirlingshire. She was 5 years of age and was a scholar. Her birthplace was Balfron. ^{1 2}

Mary married on 14 Sep 1658 in Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.^{3 4}

Despite being named William in the OPR of Saint Nicholas parish, this would appear to be the Minister of Birse, usually known as Alexander Strachan. he may have had both names.

"Alexander Strachan of the Tillifroskie family; educated at King's College, Aberdeen; M.A. (1651); schoolmaster in Aberdeen; adm. before 27th Oct. 1663; died 20th June 1664. He marr. Jean, daugh. of Robert Baron, D.D., Bishop of Orkney. She received 600 merks in 1668 from fines imposed for Church affairs by order of the archbishops and certain bishops for supply for her and three fatherless children, one of whom was born 19th June 1664.
