In 1891 the Semple family were living in Luggie Brig Nackerty Road in the Woodlands area of Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland. The census recorded James Semple as the head of a household of seven people, two parents and five children. James was aged 38 years and had been born in Beith, Ayrshire. By occupation he was a 'pit bottomer', that is he worked at the pit bottom but probably not as a hewer.

The 1901 census recorded James as born in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire. He was a widower by then. 4 5


James married Jane KERR on 4 Dec 1874 in High Church, Glasgow, Scotland.1 (Jane KERR was born about 1856 in Bothkennar, Stirlingshire, Scotland 4 and died in 1896 in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland 6.)


James next married William RATTRAY on 24 Apr 1701 in Methlick parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.2 3 (William RATTRAY was born about 1816 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland.)

"XIII. John Udny of Udny and the Newburgh.

He represented the county of Aberdeen in Parliament, 1703-1706; married, March, 1701, the Lady Martha Gordon, daughter of George, first Earl of Aberdeen, and Lord High Chancellor of Scotland, and had issue :

I. Alexander, his successor.

II. George, merchant in London, d. s. p.

I. Anne, married Charles Fraser of Inverallochy, and died 24 August, 1753, leaving issue: William Fraser, afterwards of Udny ;1. Martha Eraser, wife of Colin M'Kenzie of Kilcoy, county Ross ; 2. Eliza Fraser, who died unmarried. These ladies were served co-heiresses of their brother, William, in the lands of Muchalls and Inverallochy. Mrs. M'Kenzie is represented by Sir Colin M'Kenzie of Kilcoy, Bart., heir of line of Udny, and from her second son is descended Colonel Fraser of Castle Fraser.
