1841 Census: The 1841 census recorded William as a blacksmith. The family lived in Perth.
Census of 1861 The census of 1861 recorded him as an engine fitter. He and his family were living at 94 Glebe Street in Barony parish Glasgow. His wife was a white worker.
Census of 1871 William was recorded again as an engine fitter, but his wife was recorded as a butcher. they were still living at 94 Glebe Street Glasgow. David, Jane, William and Susan were recorded living at home. David was also a 'bootcher'. Jane was a book folder. William was an iron moulder. James was a message boy.
The 1875 marriage certificate of William Rattray, son of this William Rattray, recorded his father as a journeyman engine fitter.
William was recorded as a coal merchant in 1877.
When his son, also William Rattray, died in 1931, William was recorded in his death certificate as and engine fitter. He was deceased by then. 3 4

"XIII. John Udny of Udny and the Newburgh.
He represented the county of Aberdeen in Parliament, 1703-1706; married, March, 1701, the Lady Martha Gordon, daughter of George, first Earl of Aberdeen, and Lord High Chancellor of Scotland, and had issue :
I. Alexander, his successor.
II. George, merchant in London, d. s. p.
I. Anne, married Charles Fraser of Inverallochy, and died 24 August, 1753, leaving issue: William Fraser, afterwards of Udny ;1. Martha Eraser, wife of Colin M'Kenzie of Kilcoy, county Ross ; 2. Eliza Fraser, who died unmarried. These ladies were served co-heiresses of their brother, William, in the lands of Muchalls and Inverallochy. Mrs. M'Kenzie is represented by Sir Colin M'Kenzie of Kilcoy, Bart., heir of line of Udny, and from her second son is descended Colonel Fraser of Castle Fraser.
