General Notes:
The Quigley Family Tree in Ancestry.com records County Monaghan as the birthplace of James Quigley, but no source is given to verify this.
The 1871 census for Wilson's Row, Carluke recorded James and Mary Quigley and their six children living in Carluke in a dwelling that had just one room that had a window. James was 33 years old. He was a coal miner who had been born in Ireland.
The marriage certificate of his son Patrick in 1878 recorded James Quigley as a collier.
The 1881 census for Carluke Lanarkshire recorded James and Mary Quigley living with their three sons and one daughter at Wildmans Road. James was a coal miner. He had been born in Ireland and was aged 42 years.
The informant of James' death in 1910 was his son Patrick Quigley, of Wildman Bridge, Law, Carluke. James was recorded as a coal miner married to Mary Leitch. His age recorded at death was 62 years. Note: from earlier information his age must have been more like 72 years.
In 1936 John Quigley, his son died at Carluke. James was recorded in his death certificate as a coal miner.
In 1940 his son Peter Quigley died in Wishaw. James was recorded in his son's death certificate as a coal miner. 5 6 7 8 9
Research Notes:
Since his daughter Margaret was born in Ireland and his daughter Jane in Scotland, we may assume provisionally that James and his family came over to Scotland as a group sometime beteen 1863 and 1865.

James married Mary LEITCH, daughter of William LEITCH and Nancy LEITCH MS UNKNOWN, 6 Nov 1856 or 1857 in Ireland.1 (Mary LEITCH was born about 1839 in Ireland 5 and died in 1914 10.)

Janet was the daughter of John 6th Lord Forbes (Scots Peerage, IV. 55) and had married in 1542, John 3rd Earl of Atholl, who died within six months, and after the death of Alexander Hay, her second husband, she married as his first wife, John Leslie of Balquhain, 9 January 1547/8 (Great Seal, 20 Feb. 1547/8; Records of the Family of Leslie, III. 46)."

"Alexander Hay of Delgaty, who succeeded as 5th laird and to the representation of the family, on his father's death, had as abovementioned, already received conveyance of the fee on 9 Feb. 1518/19. In March 1532, he was affianced to Mariota Shaw, who took steps to enforce the contract of marriage on 6 March 1534/5 (Antiquities of Aberdeen and Banff, 2357), but he successfully avoided the contract.
