PARISH RELIEF APPLICATION

"John Bryan's wife alias Tweedley, Ann Kane"
of 16 Landressy Street back, 2 up left, applied for parochial relief on 12 April 1886. Her household rent was 7/- a week and her dwelling had 2 apartments. An inspector visited her there on 13 April 1886.

Ann was born in Green Street, Calton. She was aged 46 years, was married to "John Bryan", was a Roman Catholic, and worked within the home only. She had been married for 26 years, her wedding taking place in St Mary's RC Chapel in the Calton according to her statement but no marriage lines were offered as evidence of this.
NOTE No record of marriage has yet been found

"Debility" had prevented Ann from being able to support herself through work, and she stated that her husband John, who was also 46 years old, had left a week earlier in search of work and had not returned. He was the son of Michael Tweedley who resided at 5 Society Street Camlachie, and had relief from the City parish. Agnes Bryan (John's mother) was dead. Ann gave the names of 9 of their children ranging from age 23 years to 6 years.

The inspector noted that the applicant (Ann) had previously supported herself by her own efforts. This was the first application. The settlement was Barony, signed by Alex Henderson Ass. Insp.

A note was attached which read:
"This is to certify that John Tweedlie (sic) entered my property 763 Duke Street on 30 Aug 1880 and left Nov 1883.
John Crawford factor."

The particulars of settlement were:
at 16 Landressy St Cowan Barony 3m
prior 41 Norman St Campbell " 2 y 3 m
" 763 Duke St Crawford " 3 y 2 m

The application file ends:
"Certificate from factor Crawford, saw rent book for Norman St
Applicant states that her husband left her a week ago in search of work. She has not heard of him since - Applies for outside relief.
