James Quigly was six years old when the 1841 census was taken. He lived in Dumfriesshire, where he had been born, in the town of Lockerbie.

The 1881 census for Moffat, Dumfriesshire, recorded James and Agnes Quigley, their five children and a nephew, living at Craigieburn, Woodhead. The head of the household, James Quigley, was a surfaceman by occupation. He was recorded as 43 years of age and had been born in Drysdale (sic), Dumfriesshire. 1 3 4


James married Agnes BELL, daughter of James BELL and Mary SMITH, on 5 January 1872 in Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. (Agnes BELL was born about 1840 in Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire, Scotland 1 5.)


  Marriage Notes:

One of the IGI entries names the husband here as James Tweedlie, another as James Tweedie, both found as variants at this time in Scotland of the surname Quigly or Quigley. James is noted as 34 years old and Agnes as 36 years. 5
