   Another name for Hugh was QUIGLEY, Thomas.³

  General Notes:

No father's name was recorded in Hugh's birth certificate, only his mother's name 'Jane Quigley'.

'Hugh Quigley' seems to disappear and a Thomas Quigley comes into being, from the 1871 census. His birth year is noted as 1865, his birthplace as Cambusnethan, the head of the household, Mary Quigley, is his grandparent, but no birth record can be found for him.
Note: Either Hugh's name was changed to Thomas, or Hugh died and another child was born very soon and named Thomas whose birth record has not been found.

Later as 'Thomas Quigley' he lives with Jane Quigley, Hugh's mother, and his stepfather James McCann.

Thomas, aged 15 years, a coal miner, was recorded by the 1881 census as the stepson of James McCann, living at 9 Wilson Rows, in Cambusnethan parish, Lanarkshire. James was a widower with one son and two daughters of his own, all born in Overtown: James, Catherine, and Mary. James snr was born in Ayrshire. ^{1 2 3}
