Michael was the eldest child of Michael and Jane Shevlin living at 43 Second Avenue, Inveresk Edinburghshire, according to the 1881 census. He was a scholar aged 12 years, and he had been born in Whitburn, Linlithgowshire (now West Lothian). ¹
