  General Notes:

John was the second child to be given this name in the family.

The 1851 census for Falkirk, Stirlingshire recorded a labourer called John Quigly lodging in the household of Francis Gettens at Burn Bridge. His birthplace was recorded as Ireland, which is not actually true of this John, but such an error is not unusual in census entries.

In 1855 John's baby daughter, Bridget, died in Falkirk. In her death certificate her father John was recorded as an agricultural labourer.

John became a widower in 1870 when his wife Mary died. He was the informant of her death. Her death certificate stated that he was a farm labourer. He made his X mark.

The 1871 census for Falkirk recorded a John Quigley living as a lodger in the household of Beddy Slaven in Back Row Falkirk. Two other lodgers were called Quigley: Ann Quigley aged 14 years and Donald Quigely (sic) aged 42 years. John was recorded as aged 40 years and 'U M', unmarried, in a list of another eight lodgers and a son who were all recorded as unmarried. He was a labourer and had been born in Falkirk, according to this census entry. The census entry had the look of one done hastily. 3

John married Mary McANULTY on 3 August 1851 in St Mary's RC Cathedral, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (Mary McANULTY was born about 1825 and died 18 March 1870 at 4.00 pm in Back Row, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was growth in bowels.
