  General Notes:

John was a coal miner, aged 16 years, in 1901.

In the 'Wishaw Press' of 9 February 1906 an account appeared which may refer to John. Under the headings 'WATERLOO Peculiar Military Offence' it read
'At Hamilton on Saturday-before Sheriff Thomson- John McGonigle, labourer, Waterloo, a reservist, pleaded guilty to a military offence in connection with the life certificate issued to him, under which he drew his pension. The Fiscal stated that accused had derived no pecuniary gain from what he had done, and that his offence consisted of his causing his wife to fill up the life certificate in his employer's name after he had refused to do it. The Sheriff remarked that it was a serious offence, and imposed a fine of 20s or fourteen days imprisonment.'


John's name appeared in the Wishaw Press on 30 July 1915 under the headings 'IN FRANCE Cambusnethan Highlander Wounded'.
It read
'Mrs McGonigle, Gibson's Land, Cambusnethan, has been notified that her husband, Pte John McGonigle, 1st Gordon Highlanders, has been wounded in France on 19th July, and is in hospital suffering from a bullet wound in the shoulder. Pte McGonigle,who was a time-expired militiaman, rejoined the army at the outbreak of the war, and has been at the front since September, except for a period during which he was invalided home owing to an attack of rheumatic fever. Previous to rejoining the Army he was employed in Coursington Colliery, Motherwell. Pte McGonigle has at his home interesting relics of the engagements he has come through, amongst which are-a German helmet, two water bottles, a pipe, and the nose-cap of two 14lb shells, and some Belgian coins.'


John's name appeared in the Motherwell Times of 2 August 1918 under the heading 'Prisoners of War'.
It read
'Pte John McGonigle, Seaforth Highlanders, missing since 21st March, is now a prisoner of war at Parchim, Germany. Pte McGonigle joined the Gordons at the outbreak of war, and was afterwards transferred to the Seaforths. He has been wounded on 4 occasions, and lost the sight of one of his eyes. He was previously employed in Coursington Colliery as a pony driver. His wife resides at Gold's Land, Cambusnethan, Wishaw.'

In his son Joseph's marriage certificate of 1921, John was recorded as being a bricklayer's labourer by occupation. 2


John married Williamina RUSSELL, daughter of Alexander RUSSELL and Margaret Young SMITH, on 13 March 1903 in 21 Campbell Street, Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Williamina RUSSELL was born about 1884 1 and died after 7 October 1821 1.)


  Marriage Notes:

A declaration was made in the presence of James Marshall coalminer and Agnes Ramage or Marshall. A warrant of the Sheriff Substitute of Lanarkshire was dated 14 March 1903.

John McGonigle, a bachelor was a coalminer of 19 years of age. His usual residence was 64 Sleeve's Land Cambusnethan.

Williamina Russell was also 19 years old and unmarried. She was an outdoor worker and lived at Gold's Land Cambusnethan. Her father was deceased.

The marriage was registered on 14 March 1903 at Wishaw, Thomas Steele, registrar. 1
