  General Notes:

Con Quigley was recorded with his family in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, in the 1851 census. They resided at 16 New Wynd, a densely populated area where many were of Irish birth. He was married and worked as a labourer. He was of Irish birth himself. He had two sons with him at home, along with his wife Sarah. They lived between the O'Brynes and the MacGuires, both Irish like Con. Con's age was recorded as 60 years, but in his marriage certificate of 1858 his age was 40 years- obviously a flexible approach to age!

In the death certificate of his 4 year old son Francis in 1855, Constantine was recorded as a plasterer's labourer.

In 1861, the census for Hamilton recorded Constantine Quigly, his wife, and his son John, living at 28 Leechlee Street. Constantine's occupation then was recorded as a plasterer's labourer. His age was recorded as 55 years.

Constantine was recorded in similar terms in the marriage lines of his son John in 1869. The transcription in this document actually reads 'blaster's labourer'.

Con was still living in 1881. The census for 30 Crosshill Street in Dalziel parish, Lanarkshire recorded him aged 77 years as well as his second wife Sarah. Both were Irish born. Sarah was recorded as 70 years old. Con was noted as a labourer in an iron works.

Con's second wife Sarah McLuskey, died in an asylum in Bothwell parish in 1882. Her death certificate recorded her as 'married to Con Quigley'. This form of words usually indicates the husband is still alive when the wife dies, otherwise it would read 'widow of ..'. It is not impossible that he was still alive in 1882, but rather doubtful given the ages attributed to him. Con's occupation in that certificate was noted as 'mason's labourer'. Possibly it was not know whether or not he was dead.

No death certificate has yet been found for Con. 6 8

Constantine married Sally CAREY on 29 September 1844 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Sally CAREY was born about 1815 and died before 10 September 1858.)

Constantine next married Sarah McLUSKEY, daughter of Arthur McLUSKEY and Sarah YOUNG, on 10 September 1858 in Roman Catholic Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.2 (Sarah McLUSKEY was born about 1823 in Ireland and died 27 July 1882 at 8.40 am in Glasgow District Asylum, Bothwell Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was carcinoma for 1 to 2 years.

  Marriage Notes:

The couple were married by Fr Michael Condon the Roman Catholic curate in Hamilton, and the witnesses were John Reilly and Margaret McLuskey. Both Constantine and Sarah made their X mark when signing the register.

The groom, Constantine Quigley was recorded as aged 40 years when he married for the second time, although this conflicts with the age given in other situations. He was a 'widower', and worked as a plasterer's labourer. He resided at 98 Muir Street, Hamilton. Both his parents were dead.

The bride, Sarah McLuskey, was 35 years old and resided at 22 Main Street, Hamilton. She had not been married before, and both her parents were still alive.
