  General Notes:

Father James Smith baptised John Quigley and wrote a record of the baptism in the parish records of St Mary's RC Chapel, Hamilton. John was the son of Constantine Quigley and Sally Cairy. His sponsors were Thomas Rody and Mary Gillan.

The 1851 census for Hamilton recorded John's parental home as 16 New Wynd. John's age was recorded as 3 years.

In 1861 a son, John Quigly, was recorded by the 1861 census for Hamilton living with his parents at 28 Leechlee Street. He was recorded as aged 12 years, a scholar, who had been born in Hamilton. His 'mother' Sarah was in fact his stepmother, married to his father just three years earlier.

The 1871 census recorded John Quigley and Mary Conner, and their son James, aged 1 year, living with Mary's parents and family at Kibblesworth in County Durham, England. John was 22 years old and worked as a puddler. Mary was 19 years old. All three were born in Scotland. There were five other members of the Conner family in the housheold, the parents John and Jane, a daughter Agness, a dressmaker, a son John and grandson Robert, both of whom were coal putters.

In the birth certificate of his son, William, in February 1876, John was recorded as a labourer. It was John who informed the registrar of William's birth and signed the register.

In his daughter, Mary's birth certificate of 1878 John was recorded as an ironwork labourer. He notified the registrar Robert Wright of Mary's birth on 4 July 1878 at the Dalziel registry office and signed the register.

James Quigley, John's son, married Ellen Gillick in Hamilton in 1894. John Quigley was deceased then. He was recorded as a steel worker.

John's daughter, Sarah, married in 1895. John Quigley was recorded then as a coal miner.

In 1901 John's wife Mary was recorded as a widow. 5 6 10 11

John married Mary CONNOR, daughter of John CONNER and Jane CONNER MS UNKNOWN, on 31 May 1869 in Roman Catholic Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 2 (Mary CONNOR was born in 1852 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland 8.)


  Marriage Notes:

Fr James Danaher married the couple according to the rites of the Roman Catholic Church. The witnesses were Daniel Niel and Martha Murphy.

John was a bachelor of 21 yeard who worked as a labourer. His address was noted as No 91 Quarry Street, Hamilton.

Mary was also unmarried and aged 18 years. She was a factory worker of Shillinghill, Hamilton.

The marriage was registered at Hamilton on 4 June 1869, A. McMillan registrar. 2
